Choosing the Right Pool

Have you started researching swimming pools in order to decide which is perfect for your home? If so, the questions of how big do I make it, or what type of inground pool do I build (fiberglass or concrete), may seem overwhelming. We at Aquamarine Pools (aquapools.com) have years of experience in pool building and have put together this quick reference guide to help.

Which pool has the least maintenance?

Concrete Swimming Pools

Concrete pools can require as much as 8 hours of maintenance and support per week. The surface of concrete is rough and porous which means alkalinity leaches into the pool and this type of surface promotes algae growth.

In order to combat this, most pool owners hire a pool cleaning service to take care of the weekly upkeep.

  • Running the pool’s pump and filter system daily
  • Cleaning out debris from skimmers and in the pool
  • Balancing the water chemistry weekly
  • Brushing the pool weekly
  • Acid washes to clean the surface every 3 years
  • Resurfacing the pool and replacing tile every 10 years

Fiberglass Swimming Pools

Fiberglass pools have gelcoat finishes and often require less than one hour per week for maintenance. The smooth less porous finish, has a surface warranty and is algae-resistant.

The gelcoat finish on a fiberglass pool, when maintained properly, should never need refinishing.

  • Running the pool’s pump and filter system daily
  • Cleaning out debris from skimmers and in the pool
  • Balancing the water chemistry weekly
  • Brushing the pool weekly

Which pool is the easiest to install?

Concrete Swimming Pools

Concrete pools take the longest to build with many pools taking over 3 months. On average, concrete pools take a minimum of 8 weeks.

Fiberglass Swimming Pools

A fiberglass pool can be installed in as little as 1-3 days. The time to build the decking or patio area often is what takes a majority of the project time.

The pool shell is often full of water and ready for swimming by the end of day two.
