Pool Pump Settings for Freezing Temperatures

Quick Tips

It is common sense that freezing water in your swimming pool equipment can cause damage. Some may be severe enough to require replacement of pool equipment. We recommend the "first line of defense" for your pool be proper settings on your swimming pool pump.

Turning on your pump and heater when temperatures drop, keeps water from becoming stagnant in equipment and plumbing, eliminating the chance of freezing. We recommend you check your timer and/or pump settings and make sure you have it running when outside temperatures approach 40 degrees or lower.

All new pools built by Aquamarine Pools (aquapools.com) have Hayward's MaxFlo VS 500 pump. We chose this particular model due to Hayward's reputation for the best pool products in the industry, and this model delivers incredible energy savings via its advanced hydraulic design.

After setting the pump speed(s), it is recommended you check that all other equipment/water features are functioning as intended. For example, when running at a low speed for daily filtration, verify water is adequately flowing over the skimmer weirs. Operate the pump at higher speeds for the shorter periods of time needed to operate a heater, water feature, etc.
